The European Organisation for Nuclear Research, better known as CERN in Geneva, is where scientists use giant particle accelerators to unravel the fundamental mysteries of our universe. We faced the challenge of bringing the abstract and complex laws of quantum physics to life for a wide audience.
The iconic CERN Science Gateway was designed by architect Renzo Piano. The exhibitions are housed in striking, tubular structures connected by suspended glass bridges, set amidst a bustling campus that also features works of art and other exhibitions.
Upon entering, visitors are immediately immersed in an interactive journey of discovery. Here, the cosmos is not a static image, but an active experience. Visitors immediately realise that we are all made of stardust and can calculate the exact distance from their own home to a star.
Or by peering deep into the cosmos through a telescope; by analysing the light spectrum of distant galaxies, it becomes immediately clear whether the universe is contracting or expanding.
Even the most fundamental mysteries come within touching distance. Visitors discover in a fun and interactive way what the famous formula E=mc² really means for our daily lives, how to make protons collide, and how the elusive Higgs boson works.
What makes this project unique is the enormous impact of this public first. It has definitively lowered the threshold to the world’s most advanced research institute, transforming cutting-edge science into a multi-layered and unforgettable experience for young and old alike.
